Tips for Productively Working from Home

Most of us are relieved when we find an opportunity where we can work from home. It saves us time when we don’t need to commute to our workplace and there are less office distractions to worry about.

However, the flexibility that working from home offers can sometimes hinder our productivity and health if we’re not cautious. Keep this list of tips in mind next time you find yourself in a working-from-home health rut.

Make a schedule for yourself

Treat your day at home as if it’s a typical day at the office. Schedule a start time, lunch break, and end time, with specific small goals you can meet throughout the day. By making a schedule for yourself, you will make efficient use of your time and hold yourself accountable. It’s easy to fall into a distracted routine while at home, so make sure to manage your day wisely.

Control your environment

Begin by finding a room where you will feel most productive. This can be an office space in your home or even your living room. However, it’s important to find a spot where you can sit, rather than lie, in order to boost your productivity. You also want to allow natural lighting to flow into your workspace, or put some aromatherapy to use, to increase your productivity and focus. Uplifting scents, such as lemon and peppermint, have been shown to promote concentration and stimulate clear thinking, which will give you the drive you need to finish your day on schedule.

Take breaks

We can become so focused while working at home that we forget to give ourselves a much-needed break. Breaks are important because they help avoid decision fatigue and can restore our motivation to reach daily goals. A 5-minute walk can also be re-energizing and extremely beneficial to our physical health. During your break you may want to consider stretching your hands and wrists to loosen up any stiffness and reduce any pain you may have from excessive typing.

Remember to eat

It’s easy to become so engrossed in your work that you fail to realize how much time has gone by since you had your last meal. Stick to your schedule and make use of your lunch break. Keep in mind, a healthy and wholesome meal will better promote productivity and leave you feeling overall more satisfied.

Dress to Impress

Now, this doesn’t mean you need to wear your business-formal attire around your home. However, changing out of pajamas can help motivate you to be extra productive and efficient, and can help you refrain from climbing back in bed. Putting on something that makes you feel good can also help you do good.
